HONOLULU is the capital of the US island state of Hawaii.  The city is noted for the Diamond Head Peak, overlooking the famous Waikiki Beach, a favorite hangout of sun, sea and surf lovers.
 
SAN FRANCISCO is noted for its tourist attractions such as cable cars, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park, museums and art galleries.
 
HONG KONG is one of the world's principal port cities and a leading financial center of Asia and the world.  Being a former British colony, it is a Chinese city with a strong western touch.  Britain returned the colony to China in 1997.
 
SINGAPORE was founded by Sir Thomas Raffles as a trading port in 1819.  It has one of the world's finest natural harbors.  Today, Singapore is southeast Asia's foremost commercial and shipping center, conducting a flourishing international trade as a free port.
 
LOS ANGELES is the second largest city in the USA with a population of over 9 million.  The city's sunny climate makes it an ideal home of the US motion picture and television industry.
 
JAKARTA is situated on the north-western coast of the Indonesian island of Java.  Home to 13 million inhabitants, it is a melting pot of races, ethnic groups and cultures found throughout the archipelago.  The city was founded by the Dutch in 1596, and became the nation's capital in August 1945.
 
TOKYO is the capital of Japan.  The sprawling urban center contains over 15 percent of the country's population.  The city is noted for the Imperial Palace, several parks, museums, temples, and the Kabukiza theather.
 
OSAKA is Japan's second largest city.  It is noted for its underground shopping centers as well as centuries-old cultural and religious monuments, universities, and museums.  It is a major port city of Japan and is connected by one of the world's fastest railway systems to Tokyo, Japan's capital.
 
FUKUOKA is the capital of Japan's Fukuoka prefecture.  It is one of the major urban centers of the country's Kyushu island.  From Fukuoka, one can reach Nagasaki, site of the second atomic bombing in World War II.
 
OKINAWA is located southwest of mainland Japan, among the islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago.  Over 5 million people visit its white-sand beaches, mild, confortable climate and colorful festivals yearly.  It is a premier tourist spot with more than one hundred modern resort hotels and world-class convention facilities.
 
GUAM, a US territory, is a melting pot of Chamorro, Micronesian, American, and Asian cultures.  Its duty-free status attracts many tourists each year making tourism the fastest growing sector of the island's economy.  Guam is also home to elegant world class hotels, Asian PGA golf resorts, and beautiful beaches.
 
TAIPEI is the largest city and capital of Taiwan, formerly known as the island of Formosa.  The city was founded in the early 1700s and is now the cultural and educational center of Taiwan.  Taipei is one of the major industrial cities in Asia.
 
HO CHI MINH is the second most important city in Vietnam after Hanoi and a growing hub for trade and tourism.  Formerly called Saigon by 19th century French colonizers, it was renamed after the country's foremost Communist stateman when Vietnam was reunited in 1976.
 
SYDNEY is the capital of New South Wales, located along the eastern Australian seaboard.  The city, host to the 2000 Summer Olympic games, is Australia's premier gateway for trade, finance and culture.  Popular attractions include the Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour and Taronga Zoo.
 
MELBOURNE is the second largest city in Australia.  The city, now one of the country's chief ports, ranks with Sydney as a major industrial center.  Must-see attractions include Melbourne Museum, Queen Victoria Market, Victorian Arts Centre, and the National Gallery of Victoria.
 
SEOUL is the largest city and capital of South Korea.  Also knows as Kyongsong, it was founded in 1392 as capital of the Yi Dynasty.  Seoul is South Korea's industrial and cultural center.  The 1988 Summer Olypic Games were held in this city.
 
BUSAN is South Korea's second largest city.  Its economy is firmly anchored on its role as the country's chief seaport.  Culture - in the form of Buddhist shrines and festivals - also runs deep in the city's landscape and way of life.
 
BANGKOK is the capital of Thailand and offers plenty of historical and cultural wonders.  A visit to the ancient city of Ayutthaya, once the capital of more than 400 years, can attest to its past grandeur.  Among temples and rivers, street markets and shops are havens for bargain-hunters.
 
VANCOUVER is the largest city in Western Canada and the nation's chief Pacific port.  Its location on hills with views of the harbor and the Coast Range Mountains as well as its mild winter climate make it a popular tourist destination.
 
RIYADH is the capital of Saudi Arabia whose oil fields represent 30 percent of the world's known oil reserves.  From Riyadh, Mecca and Medina (Islam's most sacred cities) can now be reached.
 
XIAMEN is a port city in the Fujian province of southeastern China.  It is largely a shipping center with various industries that include food processing, shipbuilding and engineering.  Also known as Hsia-men and Amoy, the city is connected to the mainland by a causeway.
 
SHANGHAI began as Huating County, an administrative district established in 751 AD.  It assumes the central location along the coast line of China and thus making it an excellent sea and river port.  Historical sites in Shanghai include the more than 1,000-year-old Longhua Temple, Yuyuan Garden, the Confucious Temple in Jiading, and the Square Pagoda.
